Delaware County Sheriff Catches Burglary Suspects

Brief Manhunt Nets Suspects

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office captured two burglary suspects who fled the scene of a home invasion when the homeowner returned to his residence earlier this afternoon. The homeowner followed the suspects in their vehicle for several miles as sheriff’s deputies were en route to Porter Township, northeast of Sunbury, Ohio.

Suspects Kevin L. Smale, 28, of Mansfield, and Shaun T. Diles, 31, of Cardington, then crashed their vehicle several miles from the home, and fled into a rural wooded area off Monkey Hollow Road. Following a nearly three-hour search, with assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol helicopter unit, Sunbury and Genoa Police Departments, and the Sheriff’s K-9 unit, both Smale and Diles were captured. Smale is being treated for injuries he suffered from the k-9’s apprehension. Diles is being booked into the Delaware County Jail, where Smale will also be booked following his treatment at the hospital.

According to Incident Commander Captain Scott Vance of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, both suspects are being charged with the following:

• Burglary, felony 2
• Theft, felony 3
• Possessing criminal tools, felony 4
• Obstructing justice, felony 5
• Resisting arrest, misdemeanor 2

“It’s always a good day when the bad guys are caught and the victim is not physically harmed,” said Sheriff Russell Martin. “But it is doubly satisfying when law enforcement agencies coordinate efforts seamlessly and officers go home safely at night.”
Smale and Diles will be arraigned Thursday morning.
