Delaware Ohio’s PREMIER Meetup/Networking Event – Wednesday, September 17, 2014

We meet again Wednesday, September 17th, 2014 at Blend of Seven Winery in Delaware (481 London Rd. ) from 6 to 8 pm. If you arrive and the lot appears full, there is an overflow parking lot to the west.

Please join us if you are a local business person or active in local social media. Can you think of a better way to spend an early Fall Wednesday night?  Plus you can enjoy a selection of wines made at the location. There is no fee to attend the meetup…your only cost is your own food and beverage.

Corporate sponsors this month include  Delaware, Ohio’s hometown professional lacrosse team The Ohio Machine, CES Credit Union and Tint Works (Window tinting and auto detailing).  We will again have announcements and the usually unpredictable business card drawing. If you wish to donate a gift for the drawing, let me know.  (August give aways were provided by DFC Screen Printing, Service Before Self Leadership, Sequential Pathways and Kona Ice.)

We start at 6 PM and network for about 50 minutes. We have announcements, do some prize give aways and then network some more and enjoy food and beverage!

Thanks to those who made the August event another fine one. The food was catered in by the Final Score.

Delaware Librarian Receives Ohio Library Council “Librarian Of The Year.”

Librarian of the Year: Mary Jane Santos, Delaware County District Library

Mary Jane Santos, Director, Delaware County District Library (DCDL), was appointed Director at a time when the county population had exploded, becoming one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. Unfortunately, the library’s budget was not increasing to meet the needs of these new community members. Santos developed a strategy focused on two goals: pass a levy and build a branch in an area of rapidly expanding population. Under her leadership, both of these goals were accomplished. In recent years, DCDL has expanded services and facilities to keep up with the community. Santos’ strong and steady guidance has allowed staff to carry forward with innovations and changes while keeping the “small library” team feeling. During her tenure, the library has nearly doubled in size and continued to increase in circulation, visitors, programs, cardholders, and computer use. Santos has developed partnerships with schools, other libraries, higher education institutions, law enforcement, and businesses that strengthen the library’s importance in the community.

The Ohio Library Council (OLC) is continuing its tradition of honoring some of the best and brightest individuals and organizations in the Ohio public library community through its Awards and Honors program. The 2014 honorees have demonstrated outstanding
leadership and remarkable dedication to providing the best possible library service. Santos will receive her award at the Awards and Honors Luncheon on Oct. 8 at the OLC Convention and Expo in Columbus. Santos was selected based on nominations and recommendations received from her peers in the Ohio public library community.

Driver Charged With 2 Counts of Vehicular Homicide Regarding Fatal Accident on U.S. 23

The Delaware Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a four-vehicle fatal crash that occurred at approximately 11:30 A.M. on August 20, 2014 on US 23 at SR 229 in Delaware County.

Sanjay Dhall, age 51, of Canton, Michigan, was driving a 2007 Kia Rondo southbound on US 23 followed by Curtis Dixon, age 69, of Howell, Michigan, who was driving a 2014 Ford Escape. Both vehicles had stopped at a red light at the intersection with SR 229/Norton Road. Randall G. Lee, age 58, of Christiana, Tennessee, was driving a 2010 International semi tractor/trailer southbound on US 23 when he failed to stop for the traffic ahead and struck Mr. Dixon’s vehicle in a rear end collision. Mr. Dixon’s vehicle was then forced into Mr. Dhall’s vehicle. Both Mr. Dixon’s vehicle and Mr. Dhall’s vehicle were forced to the left and into the median and Mr. Dhall’s vehicle overturned onto its top. Mr. Lee’s vehicle then went through the intersection and struck a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Lewis Fisher, age 55, of Marengo, Ohio, that was eastbound on Norton Road entering the intersection at a green light. Mr. Lee’s vehicle and Mr. Fisher’s vehicle then went off the southwest corner of the intersection and came to rest.

Mr. Dixon and his passenger, Patricia Dixon, age 71, of Howell, Michigan, were pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Dhall was transported by Delaware County Medic 5 to OSU Hospital where he is listed in stable condition. Mr. Fisher was transported by Delaware County Medic 4 to Grant Hospital. Mr. Fisher’s passenger, Sandra Whitley, age 70, of Ashley, Ohio, was transported by Med Flight to Grant Hospital. Mr. Lee and his passenger, Bobby Macera, age 48, of Port Charlotte, Florida, were treated and released at the scene by Delaware County Medic 1.

Mr. Lee was taken into custody and was incarcerated at the Delaware County Jail and charged with failure to stop within an assured clear distance ahead and two counts of vehicular homicide. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.

Both Mr. and Mrs Dixon were wearing their seatbelts.

Next of kin has been notified and the crash remains under investigation.
