Delaware’s People In Need Calls For Volunteers

PIN2016 Produce Market Volunteer

Produce Market Basics:

Produce Markets are designed to provide fresh food to individuals and families in need. The Mid-Ohio Food Bank supplies all of the produce distributed at the Market and most of what is offered is fruits and vegetables but may also include bread and dairy items. Each Market can serve up to 300 families and eligibility is set at 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. After each event is completed, any remaining produce is distributed to PIN food pantry clients and other MOFB Partner Agencies as needed.

In addition to PIN staff, each Market event needs approximately 10-15 volunteers to assist with this important project.

Dates:

The 2016 events are scheduled on the last Wednesday of the month, March through November.

Location:

PIN facility at 138 Johnson Drive, Delaware.

Distribution Times:

2:30 to 4:30 PM

Volunteer Basics:

Recruited volunteers should arrive at least 30 minutes prior the market start time. We are asking for volunteers to show up between 1:30 and 2:00 PM and stay until the Market is closed at 4:30 PM.

Parking at the PIN facility is limited. Volunteers are to park in the Office City Parking lot across the street from PIN. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.

The Markets are outside events and are held rain or shine, hot or cold; so please come prepared!

Volunteer jobs include: market set up, client sign in, assist clients to collect produce and move through the line, traffic control, and, clean up

Symphony Opens Season With a Nod to Hispanic Composers and Performers

When the Central Ohio Symphony launches its 37th season at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, it will fill the auditorium at Gray Chapel with the sound of Brahms and works by three Latino/Hispanic composers. 

 
The season debut concert will feature a world premiere of Recuerdos by Ohio composer Sonia Morales-Matos, along with Danzon #2 by Arturo Márquez and Huapango by José Pablo Mancayo.  The orchestra will also showcase two members of the internationally renown Dalí Quartet, violinist Simón Gollo and cellist Jesús Morales, performing the Double Concerto in A Minor by Johannes Brahms. This will be the third concert featuring the cellist Morales, brother of composer Sonia Morales-Matos and Music Director Jaimes Morales-Matos, who will begin his 13th season with the Symphony.

IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio TriathlonTAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 5, 2015) – IRONMAN announced today the addition of the IRONMAN® 70.3® Ohio triathlon, which will take place on August 21, 2016, in the scenic and historic city of Delaware. The race venue is located just north of the bustling capital city of Columbus.

“As the IRONMAN 70.3 race series continues to grow, we are excited to have Delaware, Ohio join our family of exceptional events,” said Steve Meckfessel, Managing Director of Global Race Operations for IRONMAN. “IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio is sure to provide unforgettable race experiences for our athletes and we are proud to be able to offer a new race in this central location.”

The IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio triathlon begins with a single-loop, 1.2-mile swim in the calm waters of Delaware Lake. Athletes will then embark on a flat and fast 56-mile bike course that includes a few technical sections along the way. The course will wind through Delaware, Marion and Morrow counties before returning to Transition 2, located at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium. Finally, athletes will take on a double-loop, 13.1-mile run course with gently rolling hills. The course offers scenic country views and an amazing finish in front of Selby Stadium.

“Delaware is honored to host the new IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio event and the sport’s best athletes,” said Delaware Mayor Carolyn Kay Riggle. “This spectacular event and the city of Delaware will provide a great experience for the athletes, fans and families.”

Centrally located in Ohio, Delaware is located less than 30 miles north of the capital city of Columbus. With its rich history and traditional downtown, the city of Delaware offers both historic sites along with modern accommodations. Delaware is home to Ohio Wesleyan University, one of the top liberal arts colleges in the United States. The city is also famous for The Little Brown Jug, an internationally known horse race which is part of the Triple Crown of harness racing.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio triathlon will offer age-group qualifying slots for the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, recently announced to be taking place in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

It’s that time of year again where Delaware folks start their preparations for the fall weather and traditions that come with it! If you’re looking to try something new that’s family friendly and has that fall spirit, keep your calendars marked for these upcoming events.

Alum Creek’s Fall Campout – October 2nd
Make your way to Alum Creek’s Campground and enjoy an evening of pumpkin decorating, hiking on haunted trails, trick or treating around the campground, and several games and contests. This is a great event for families and anyone who wants to experience Halloween early!

2015 5k Pumpkin Run & 1 Mile Walk – October 3rd, 8am
In support of Live Strong, there will be a 5k race and 1 mile walk at OWU’s Selby Stadium. Entry fee is $30 for the run, and $20 for the walk. There will also be a kid’s sprint at 9am with a $5 entrance fee.

Race for the Soul – October 3d, 9am
The Columbus Zoo will be hosting their 9th annual Race for the Soul to bring awareness for the needs of people all throughout Central Ohio such as food, clean drinking water, medical attention, and emotional support. There will be a kids run at 8:45, and a 5k run or 1 mile walk around the zoo at 9. Entry fee is $15-40, depending on whether or not you have a zoo membership and what race you run in.
Powell Oktoberfest – October 3rd, 12pm-10pm
The Village Green Amphitheater Pavillion will be hosting their annual Oktoberfest featuring live German music and entertainment, food trucks, and activities for all ages.

Kilbourne Community Fall Festival – October 3rd, 8am
Enjoy a full day of fall fun and activities starting with a delicious breakfast from 8-10am; followed by a hog roast, petting zoo and games along with crafts and a flea market (9am-4pm) Also. enjoy stories and historical displays relevant to the local area.
Oakland Nursery’s Fall Festival – October 10th-11th                                                                                                                                                                     Oakland will be hosting their 35th annual Fall Festival at all their store locations this year! There will be a haunted house, a petting zoo, balloon art, pumpkin painting, and sales on merchandise. Don’t miss out on this fall-filled event.

Miller’s Country Gardens Fall Festival – October 11th, 12pm
Take a hayride through the pumpkin patch and explore the corn maze at this great fall event at Miller Country Gardens in Delaware. There will also be Pumpkin Express barrel rides, face painting, balloon sculpturing, live music by “In A Jam”, and great food by Sock Hop Soda Shop.

Campfire at Stratford Ecological Center – October 16th, 6pm-8pm
Make your reservations quick for this great night of fall fun and camping out. This is a great event for smaller kids. There will be a wagon ride through the Stratford woods, popcorn and cider, hiking, and storytelling.

The Central Ohio Symphony is entering into their 37th year of fantastic music and performance. Their season debut concert will be shown at the Gray Chapel in Delaware. Tickets can be ordered at centralohiosymphony.org

Leed’s Pumpkin Farm
Located in Ostrander, this is a place I always looked forward to visiting every fall when I was a kid. There are fields of pumpkins to go picking for, hayrides and petting zoos, ziplines, and great snacks. I definitely recommend this place for all ages. They are open every Saturday and Sunday through October 31st.

Orange Branch Library to Host Book Release Party

Delaware, OH — Mindy McGinnis is celebrating the release of her third book,A Madness So Discreet, with a release party at the Delaware County District Library’s (DCDL) Orange Branch.

The Tuesday, October 6 visit is sponsored by Fundamentals Parent-Teacher Store. McGinnis will speak at 7 p.m. Joining her is Jennifer McGowan, author of Maid of Wonder, Demitria Lunetta, author of In the After, and Geoffrey Girard, author of Project Cain.All of these authors are also featured in the new YA horror anthology, Among the Shadows.

“A Madness So Discreet, Mindy’s new gothic thriller, offers something new and, might I say, awesome, to fans of her dystopian duology, Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust,” said Teen Librarian Becky Woodruff. “Our teens love creepy reads, so Madness and the new anthology Among the Shadows: 13 Stories of Darkness and Light are sure to be popular this fall.”

A Madness So Discreet tells the tale of a girl who is sent to an asylum in Victorian times. Once a visiting doctor recognizes her potential beneath her anger they work side by side on crime scenes to uncover more about criminal psychology.

Buckeye Valley Lady Barons Soccer To Kick For The Cure

Buckeye Valley Kicking Children’s Cancer!

 


 
Join the Buckeye Valley Junior Varsity and Varsity Lady Barron Soccer teams so you can make a difference for children and families battling pediatric cancer.

The Buckeye Valley Lady Barons are donating all the proceeds from the Kick for The Cure soccer game against Jonathan Alder on Monday, September 29, 2015 to The Lampstrong Foundation, www.lampstrong.com. This foundation is a nonprofit founded by Columbus Crew and The Ohio State University Goalkeeper, Matt Lampson. Matt is a Stage IV Hodgkins Lymphoma Survivor.

The mission the the Lampstong Foundation is to provide financial, emotional and motivational support to cancer patients and their families and recognize the kids effected by this disease. The children supported by the foundation are recognized and honored as Lampstong Heros.

This past year The Lampstrong Foundation honored Junior, Buckeye Valley Lady Baron Anna Cox, a Hodgkins Lympoma survivor as a Lampstrong Hero.

Help support children like Anna by attending this game. The Junior Varsity team kicks off at 5:00pm and Varsity at 7:00pm. Additional ways to support this great cause during the game are purchasing bake sale goodies, a 50/50 raffle, t-shirt sales and purchasing concession items.
