Suspect In Custody After Assaulting Juvenile at Highbanks

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office has a suspect in custody for the sexual assault of a juvenile female that occurred today around 12:30 pm at Highbanks Park in Lewis Center. According to Sheriff Russell Martin, “this incident is in no way related to the August 5th sexual assault of an 18-year-old male. Even though these two incidents would appear related due to proximity of time and location, based on several factors we are positive they are not connected.”

Sheriff Martin commends the alert Highbanks park ranger who observed suspicious activity, and immediately responded by detaining the suspect, assisting the victim, and notifying the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

The 57-year-old suspect is in custody in the Delaware County Jail awaiting charges. The victim was taken to the hospital with no serious physical injuries reported.

The Sheriff’s Office stresses that these two assaults are isolated events, where today’s incident resulted in the immediate apprehension of the suspect. Investigation into the August 5th incident is still ongoing.
