DELAWARE, Ohio – The Strand Theatre is set to screen “Fences” as part of its February Black History Month celebration featuring the films of Denzel Washington. The movie event, sponsored by Tim and Ann McNamara, will take place on Tuesday, February 14th at 7 PM in the main theater.

Directed by Denzel Washington and written by August Wilson, “Fences” is a 2016 drama film. The film tells the story of Troy Maxson, played by Denzel Washington, a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh who once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family when he squashes his son’s chance to meet a college football recruiter.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Fences” has a certified fresh rating of 92%, with 273 reviews, and an audience score of 75%. Viola Davis won an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in the movie.
