About four or five years ago I had just started fishing in Delaware and one day while fishing at the front of Blue Limestone I was truly mystified by the gentleman standing beside me. I’m not a shy person at all so I started to talk to him. What really puzzled me was the bait that he was throwing and how intensely he was watching the action of the bait as he worked it back in to the shore. Come to find out he had handmade that bait as he does many baits, and he was making sure it was running smooth, and had nice action. We chatted for a while then parted ways, and I kept doing what I normally do – fish. I was extremely interested in how he was making his baits, and really wanted a few for the end of my line, but didn’t at that point know how to get them. Just on an off chance we met again, in the Ohio Game Fishing Forums. It was in the forum that I was able to put two and two together that I was chatting with the very individual that had intrigued me just a few months earlier.
I believe in buying local whenever I have the chance. David Fields owner of Mad Moose Baits gives every fisherman/fisher-lady a wonderful opportunity to buy local. David is making custom baits that are affordable. I have been using Mad Moose Baits on almost every fishing trip for the last several years! I catch fish on Mad Moose Baits all the time one of my first trips out with the baits produced some Largemouth Bass action. Many trips after my first have produced all types of fish ranging from Bluegill, and Rock Bass to Smallmouth Bass, and Crappie even Catfish on the occasion. My best catch all year even
came on Mad Moose Bait!
One of my most exciting catches all year came to me while throwing the inline spinner bait known as the Scioto Slam. I was standing in waist deep water while my son looked on from the bank of the Olentangy River. I had just commented to him that I was surprised that we hadn’t caught anything yet. The sun was setting rapidly as I stood in the water hoping for a nice Smallmouth Bass, and that’s when the excitement started – my ultra-light rod doubled over, and the fight began! My son yelled out to me form across the river GET HIM DAD! All that was running through my mind was don’t horse him take your time. As I reached for my net my heart was pounding, and began to beat faster, and faster till I landed what was not a Smallmouth Bass at all, but a 26” Fish Ohio Saugeye! Certainly to date the biggest fish I have caught all year. Felt so amazing to know that I caught that Saugeye a bait made right here in our community.
David makes hard baits such as in-line spinner baits, offset spinner baits, and also masterfully custom paints crank baits of all kinds. I always feel better when I buy baits from David because I am keeping my money in the local economy that way, and I’m still catching fish like crazy, and you can too! In all honesty don’t you want a fisherman making the baits you’re throwing? After all who knows fishing better than fisherman!
