This is the response Joe Evener typically gets when he tells people he just had a book published. “Everything was always hush-hush. Nobody ever knew I w
as writing a book except for my family, until I was on the verge of publishing.” Joe Evener, a local Big Walnut teacher and coach, published his first novel this past November.“Coach E”, as he is affectionately called by the high school girls track team, (which he has been coaching for over 20 years), lives in Delaware with his wife Bronwen. The couple have two sons, Jacob and Joey, as well as 2 grandsons, Jacob and Jameson.
Evener has been writing off and on since he was in 4th grade, and realized that he had both a talent for and interest in writing stories to entertain his friends and classmates. “It’s therapeutic”, he said. “For instance, if I’m having a bad day, you can bet a character is getting killed”.
The book, “Journey to Seras”, has been in the works for 7 years and is to be the first in the 5 part series dubbed “The Heart of Seras”. The book is set in the fictitious Sunset, Ohio where the main character, 15 year old Julie Ayers, attends Cedar Creek High School. Julie is your average, semi-popular teenager who enjoys playing basketball and cheerleading with her best friend. But, naturally, there is nothing natural about her. Even she has no idea that she is anything but your run-of-the-mill teenager.
The new language arts teacher, Marcus Campbell, however, does. It isn’t long after meeting Julie that Marcus discovers that she is anything but ordinary. Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s happy about it. No one thinks that the prophesied savior of their universe is going to be a 1 5 year old who can barely throw a punch; let alone face down the most powerful evil Seras has ever faced.
Marcus has to assume the role of Julie’s mentor, convince her that there are dimensions other than her own, train her to fight, and, oh yeah, persuade her to travel to said parallel dimension and single handedly deliver Seras from evil. No wonder the story spans 5 books.
As a fervent lover of series such as “Lord of the Rings” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, and classics like “Ivanhoe” and “Robbin Hood”, it is only fitting that Evener’s first series should be an epic fantasy/adventure quest. “Theres a great quote I heard once that said, ‘if you haven’t found the book you want to read, write it’,” he commented. “That is what I am doing here. I want to see it through to the end and see what happens to Julie and Marcus. I hope everyone else wants to see what happens, too.”
“Journey to Seras” can be purchased on Amazon, Rogue Phoenix Press, and as an ebook through Barnes and Noble.
