Living and working in Delaware, Ohio you notice a certain hustle and bustle in the wee small hours of the morning. Downtown is home to a variety of eateries that serve up some very YUM breakfast options to start your day off right. Whether you’re a fan of traditional breakfast fare or crave something more unique, here are five places to get breakfast in Delaware that are sure to satisfy the morning growl in your belly! This list is in no particular order.
- Hamburger Inn, 16 North Sandusky Street.
Located in the heart of downtown Delaware, Hamburger Inn has been a local institution since 1932. The “Hambo” is the grand daddy of them all and famous for its breakfast dishes, including the signature “Cinnamon Rolls!” When asked, they will pop one of those on the grill to heat up and top with whipped cream.
At the time of our visit, we feasted on the “Tex Mex Scrambler.” This dish is a generous portion of 3 eggs, peppers, onions, fried potatoes, bacon, chorizo, and cheese. You will not go hungry on this one.
Other popular menu items include their home made “Country Sausage and Gravy’ and the ‘Hometown Favorite.” And the staff? What can I say, they are all long time friends of mine and they provide SUPERB service!
- Fresh Start Bakery, 24 North Sandusky Street
If are on the go and looking a place that makes your meal on the spot, Fresh Start Bakery is the perfect stop for breakfast! This charming bakery specializes in homemade pastries, including croissants, cinnamon rolls, and muffins, as well as artisanal breads and bagels.
Our scrumptious selection that morning was a bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted everything bagel with a cofree to go. A great fill me up to devour back at the office.
Fresh Start also offers a selection of breakfast sandwiches and quiches made with locally sourced ingredients.
Rutherford Café is a cozy breakfast spot that’s rather hot when you have limited time to stop. The menu features traditional breakfast sandwiches served on your choice of bread, as well as unique creations like the “Wrappin Up The Sunshine” a scrambled egg, tomato, spinach, onion, feta, and avocado in a wrap.
The option that caught my eye this morning is the “Meat Mania,” scrambled egg, ham, bacon, smoked sausage, gouda on your choice of bagel. Mine was ordered as a wrap with added tomato and onion. However, lets talk about the smoke sausage for a moment, WOWZA is all I can say!
The Rutherford Café also has an assortment of bagels and lox. I would be remised if I did not mention their friendly service and welcoming atmosphere.
- Ciao Café, 2 North Sandusky Street
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, check out Ciao Cafe. This Italian-inspired eatery serves up some of the best coffee in town, and has a PHENOMANAL offering of breakfast pastries (I am eying those donuts!)
After a few social media exchanges between Ciao and DelawareO, I could NOT resist the offer to try the Nutella Crepe. Not only did we try it, we got strawberries and whipped cream to top it of, and OH MY! You want to talk about delectable?
This treat was so sweet, we had to share it with a friend! Made fresh while you wait, and let me tell you, there is enough to go around!
- Eclectic Diner & Sweeterie, 755 US Highway 23 North.
A new favorite of mine! Located on the outskirts of Delaware, the Electric Diner is a relatively off the beaten path of the downtown breakfast scene, but well worth a trip! My first time in there, and I felt like Norm from Cheers and EVERYBODY knew my name!
This retro-themed diner features a menu of classic diner fare, breakfast sandwiches, omelets, and pancakes. As a bonus, the diner included non-menu items of old and new friends, shout out to Don and Kat!
The standout dish that “immeattily” caught my eye was the “Meat Lovers Diner Scrambles” – 2 eggs, chorizo, bacon, sausage, onions, and cheddar jack cheese (catching a theme here?).
Being the big eater that I am, I am ashamed to admit I had get a to-go box because I could not finish it all! and had to turn down a breakfast dessert.
Honorable Mention
The Dipped Donut, 256 South Sandusky Street
I promise you that I did not leave this off by mistake. The problem? Everytime I come in to the office at COHatch, someone has a box of their yummy goodness sitting at the counter!! I NEVER get a chance to go down to pick out my own fare!
The one thing I know, ANYTIME there is a peanut butter donut in the box, I QUICKLY GRAB IT! It is THAT GOOD! This donut shop is the MOTHER of all DONUT SHOPS with their made to order menu, so you can NOT go wrong here!
