Main Street Delaware’s First Friday Promises To heat Up Downtown.

wpid-img_0717.jpgFire Department Displays, Pumpkin Decorating, Teen Entertainment Area All Part of Celebration

Delaware, Ohio – The Delaware Fire Department will turn up the heat during Main Street Delaware’s Oct. 3 First Friday event by filling the downtown with firefighting equipment and safety demonstrations, including a simulated house fire and fire-extinguisher training.

The family-friendly First Friday also will feature a children’s pumpkin-decorating area with pumpkins donated by Powell-based MadMax Farms, 4140 Clarkshaw Road. For teen-agers, the evening will include an entertainment area hosted by the William Street Lighthouse Youth Program. Sandusky Street will be closed between Spring and Winter streets for the community First Friday celebration, which is sponsored by Barley Hopsters, 1 N. Sandusky St.

“Everyone loves October’s First Friday,” says Frances Jo Hamilton, Main Street Delaware’s executive director. “Children light up as they explore the firefighting equipment and imagine themselves as the heroes who use it, and families benefit from the fire safety tips. The children’s pumpkin decorating area and teen entertainment space are icing on the cake – or whipped cream on the steaming mug of fall hot chocolate.”

For those seeking even more reasons to come downtown, the Main Street Delaware Farmers’ Market continues from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 25 on Sandusky Street.

In November, Main Street Delaware will welcome fall with its Nov. 7 First Friday celebration, sponsored by the Delaware County District Library, and then welcome Santa Claus on Nov. 23 during the 2014 Christmas Parade. This year’s parade theme is “A Super Hero Christmas.” Parade entry forms will be available soon on the Main Street Delaware website, www.mainstreetdelaware.com.

Also to celebrate the season, Main Street Delaware’s Dec. 5 First Friday will feature the lighting of the downtown Christmas tree, complete with carolers, horse-drawn wagon rides, and Santa’s House hosted at the Strand Theatre, 28 E. Winter St. In addition, the community also is invited to join the downtown merchants as they hold a Holiday Open House from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 6 to help shoppers find the perfect holiday gifts for family, friends, and loved ones.

Public Health Week to kick off Main Street Delaware’s First Friday

The Delaware General Health District is kicking off Public Health Week (April 7-13) by welcoming residents to attend Main Street Delaware’s First Friday event on April 4 in downtown Delaware. The Health District is sponsoring the event and has lined up a fun, interactive game where residents can learn about the many aspects of public health. Game participants will be entered to win a family of four season pass at the Jack Florance Swimming Pool at Mingo Park in Delaware.

The week officially starts with the Delaware County Board of Commissioners on Monday April 7 proclaiming April 7-13 as Public Health Week in the county during their regular session. On this day, the Health District will also launch a new interactive map that includes the locations of all Delaware County restaurants that offer half portions. DGHD offers this map in an effort to help residents be more mindful of healthier eating choices.

The week also includes an emergency preparedness drill for DGHD staff on Tuesday and a free clinic services day on Wednesday. A DGHD employee health day will take place on Thursday, which includes a morning walk, a healthy potluck and a chicken dance at 2:30 p.m. where staff and area merchants are invited to take a break and participate in some physical activity. The week will wrap up on Friday with the announcement of the winners in the Chesrown Cares contest.

March for Art – Another First Friday Success!

March for Art 2014 (1) IMG_20140307_210025Friday night March 7, 2014 will be remembered. It was a night of beautiful weather after what can arguably be dubbed “the worst winter in Ohio ever.”

People were out, energy was in the air and 46 degrees felt like a heat wave. (When we did the Chocolate Walk video for the DelawareO Video Show just 4 weeks ago, it was 6 degrees!)

The event was sponsored by Main Street Delaware and Button Up (more on this business later). Here is the event summary from the Main Street web page:  “25 local galleries exhibiting artwork from Delaware City Schools.  The official ‘Gallery Opening’ will be held in participating locations on First Friday in March and the exhibit will remain up in the downtown for your perusal through the end of the month.” So even if you missed our young talent, you still have 3 weeks to take it in.March for Art 2014 (6) IMG_20140307_180444 (2)

Part of our mission at DelawareO is to help promote a healthy and vibrant downtown. This is not to exclude anyone else from the four corners of Delaware County, but to start here and work our way out.

March for Art 2014 (5) IMG_20140307_183716Since art was the focus, let’s get to it. I loved walking around and seeing what our kids created. Having no art talent myself, I was amazed at what I saw. It was fun to enter in to the different stores to see what was on display. The downtown merchants I spoke with were loving the traffic this event generated to their stores.  What catches my eye is the use of color and dimension.

March for Art 2014 (2) IMG_20140307_205207The sponsor of the event was Button Up (a gallery of hand-made art). I was able to speak briefly with the owner, Kathleen Miller. Her store had quite a buzz…they were previewing new watercolors by Mary Morrison. I have prints of her work in my insurance office and love them!

We’ll be back for “Mascot Madness” on Friday, April 5, 2014. Plans are to have the video crew there too. So if you see our team, be sure to tell us “I want to be part of the DelawareO Video Show”  …we may just have the chance to make you famous.March for Art 2014 (4) IMG_20140307_193111
