DELAWARE, Ohio — Investigators say scammers convinced a Delaware County woman to send them boxes stuffed with cash.
On February 19th, 2023, Delaware County Sheriffs Office (DCSO) responded to a report of theft at a Delaware, Ohio address. The report states that on February 16th, 2023, the victim received a call from an individual impersonating her grandson, claiming to have been in an accident and needing to be bailed out of jail.
Per the report, the suspect went on to say he was “on his phone and rear-ended an elderly female and pregnant female causing injury.”
The victim was then contacted by another person by the name of “Mike Weller.” Per the report “Mike” stated he was an attorney and is the father of (her grandsons) friend Steven. The victim stated “‘Mike’ called her many times to keep her updated on the situation. “Mike” went on to put the victim in touch with a “judge” by the name of “Walter Sessions.”
The report goes on to say that “‘Walter’ told the victim she needed to send $9,100 to a federal bondsman.” The scammer then gave an address in California to send the money too.
The victim withdrew the requested amount of money in cash and shipped it via FedEx to the provided address.
Two days later, the scammer posing as “‘Walter’ called back stating her grandson “had broken a gag order and was charged again,” while requesting additional funds, which the victim did. Shortly after, the victim discovered the scam and called law enforcement. .
Law enforcement reached out to FedEx to prevent the delivery of the second package, but were unsuccessful. DSCO also called the LAPD, but were directed to call a specific division during business hours. Eventually, deputies were able to reach a FedEx representative and had a “hold” on the package
The victim later learned that her grandson was not involved in any accident or arrest.
The DSCO says to “never send or give money to anyone you don’t know. If the situation feels or sounds suspicious, it’s always best to call us so we can verify for you. If you or someone you know receive a similar call, please hang up and call us to file a report: 740-833-2800.”
