SPRINGFIELD, OHIO – The Ohio Indoor Performance Association (OIPA) hosted an indoor marching percussion, and winter color guard competition at Springfield Holland High School in Springfield, Ohio, on March 12, 2023.

Delaware County was represented by two performing groups from area high schools, the Delaware Hayes Winter Guard (color guard), and the Olentangy Liberty High School Winterline (percussion).
The Delaware Hayes Winter Guard emerged as the winner in the Scholastic Regional AA category with a score of 66.350.

The Delaware Hayes Winter Guard impressed the judges with their intense and heavy show titled “Polemos,” which means a divine personification or embodiment of war. The performance was inspired by the movie “Gladiators” and featured the performers as warriors entering the arena for battle. The Winter Guard captured the essence of the theme and delivered a remarkable performance.
Not to be out done the Olentangy Liberty HS Winterline, performed “The Dying of the Light” on Sunday and won first place in the Percussion Scholastic A division with a score of 80.1.

Winter Guard is an indoor performance ensemble that utilizes a recorded soundtrack of the ensemble’s choosing, flags, rifles, sabers, dancers, and other props and set pieces to produce a 2-8 minute performance. This activity is like a color guard minus the marching band and the harsh weather conditions.

On the other hand, Indoor drumlines is a marching percussion ensemble uses typical marching percussion instrumentation, including a front ensemble and a battery. These ensembles perform in a gymnasium, and they make use of various props, set pieces, visual performers, and technology to create 4-8 minute musical productions. This activity is similar to a marching band minus the wind sections and color guard.
The next OIPA event will be held this Sunday, March 19, 2023, at 9:00 am at Hilliard Darby High School in Hilliard, Ohio.
The admission fee for the event is $10, and children 6 and under are free
Both Delaware Hayes Winter Guard and Olentangy High School Winter Guard will represent Delaware County at Hilliard Darby on Sunday. The Olentangy Liberty High School Winterline will not be performing since this is a winter guard only event.

The OIPA offers competitive and non-competitive performance opportunities for high school and independent ensembles throughout the winter and spring seasons, totaling 45 color guard units, and 20 percussion units, as well as winds.
The events are held throughout Ohio and culminate in a State Championship event where a State Champion is named in each class of each division.
