SUNBURY, Ohio — An anonymous request for directory information on thousands of Big Walnut students has been withdrawn.
During a school board meeting Thursday, treasurer Darren Jenkins told members about an anonymous request for directory information of around 4,200 students in the Big Walnut district. Information defined by state law and district policy as directory information is subject to public records requests under Ohio and federal law.
Directory information includes things like name, address, grade level, sports participation, height and weight, and awards.
Friday night, school board member Doug Crowl told DelawareO that request was withdrawn by the requester.
“I’m so glad to hear the anonymous request for student information has been withdrawn,” said State Rep. Beth Lear. “As legislators, we still need to take a deeper look at the law and see if there are any changes we need to make to ensure students are protected in the future.”
District administrators said Friday that they would not have released the information unless forced. Lawyers for the district had told the administration that they would likely need to comply with the request.
No further information about the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal of the request was immediately available. The reason for the request was not revealed.
