Sunbury, Ohio – Nelle’s Homesteading Workshops at the Community Library in Sunbury are set to host an exciting event for those interested in the art of jam and jelly making. The workshop, titled “Jam and Jelly Making with a Make It and Take It,” is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 27, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the library’s meeting room.
Nelle, a knowledgeable homesteading expert, will share her expertise and provide a hands-on experience for participants. Each month, Nelle covers various aspects of homesteading, offering valuable insights and practical skills to attendees.
During the workshop on June 27th, participants will receive a crash course on food preservation techniques, with a specific focus on canning, tools, and processes. Nelle will delve into the importance of canning for bacterial elimination, discussing the necessary tools, such as the steam juicer and water bath canner. Attendees will learn about the different foods suitable for water bath canning and those that require alternative methods.
The workshop will also cover essential preparations for canning, including jar and lid preparation. Nelle will explain the significance of pectin and its role in jelly and jam making, enlightening participants about the differences between jelly, jam, fruit butter, marmalade, and conserve.
A highlight of the event will be a demonstration on how to make fruit juice jelly, specifically Concord Grape jelly. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe the process and take home a small jar of this delectable jelly to share with their families.
Individuals aged 14 and above who are interested in enhancing their homesteading skills are invited to participate in the workshop.
