A Movie That Will Make You Think Twice About Your Dinner Date Options
The Strand Theatre will be hosting a special one-time showing of the science fiction classic “Soylent Green” on Tuesday, January 3 at 7:00 p.m.
One of my earliest memories of this movie is watching it on HBO as a kid and being terrified by the riot scene, where the people scoopers come in and collect people. It’s a moment that has stuck with me forever.
In “Soylent Green,” Charlton Heston stars as NYPD detective Robert Thorn, who is investigating the murder of an executive at the Soylent Corporation, a rations manufacturer in a densely overpopulated and starving New York City of the future. With the help of elderly academic Solomon “Sol” Roth (Edward G. Robinson), Thorn begins to make progress on the case, until the governor mysteriously shuts it down. Determined to uncover the truth, Thorn embarks on his own investigation into the murder. Along the way, he uncovers the shocking truth about the new food source known as Soylent Green, famously exclaiming the iconic phrase, “Soylent Green is people!”

This sci-fi mystery thriller is rated PG and also features Leigh Taylor-Young. It was directed by Richard Fleischer and produced by Walter Seltzer and Russell Thacher, with a screenplay by Harry Harrison and Stanley R. Greenberg.

It has a rating of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics consensus reading, “Soylent Green grapples with weighty themes, but its production values and strong performances make it a worthwhile watch.” You can read more reviews and ratings on the Rotten Tomatoes website at https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/soylent_green.

I don’t know about you, but I am extremely glad this was only a dystopian movie about 2022, and not reality! Anyone hungry?
